Canon did issue the 40D press release, so it is official now.
Some of the 40D features are
- Ten megapixel CMOS
- 6.5 fps continuous shooting
- Three-inch LCD screen (compared with the EOS 30D’s 2.5-inch monitor)
- Brighter LCD screen
- Camera menu organized like the EOS-1D Mark III
- Improved AF system
- Supports Battery Grip BG-E2N
- DIGIC III image processor
