Lightroom 4 beta now available

The Lightroom team is proud to introduce the fourth major version of the product designed for and by photographers. It was 6 years ago today when we introduced the very first public beta of Lightroom at MacWorld on January 9, 2006. (Yes, it was Mac only, smaller in footprint than most raw files and didn’t have a crop tool!) Since 2006 we’ve been hard at work improving an application that’s intended to be as easy to use as it is powerful. This release builds on the fundamental performance architecture and image quality improvements in Lightroom 3 to provide a truly complete workflow solution. I kept hearing from customers that they love Lightroom but needed to leave the Lightroom to complete X, Y or Z. Lightroom 4 tackles those issues with improvements to image organization, adjustment tools and comprehensive publishing options.

Download the beta http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/lightroom4/

IMPORTANT NOTES, PLEASE READ

Primary Known Issues

Lightroom 4 beta is not complete but please provide feedback on the available enhancements.

Lightroom 4 beta will not upgrade Lightroom 1.x, Lightroom 2.x or Lightroom 3.x catalogs. The beta is intended to be used for testing and feedback purposes. Lightroom 1.x, 2.x, 3.x and 4 beta libraries will be able to be migrated to the finished version of Lightroom 4.

While data loss is not expected, this is an early ‘beta’ quality build and you should always work on duplicates of files that are securely backed up.

Lightroom 4 beta will not overwrite or interfere with a machine that currently has Lightroom 1, Lightroom 2 or Lightroom 3 installed.

Develop settings applied in Lightroom 4 beta are not guaranteed to transfer correctly to the final version of Lightroom 4

The Lightroom 4 beta will expire after Lightroom 4.0 is available

Additional known issues are listed below.

Minimum system requirements

Macintosh

Lightroom 4 beta Enhancements

Video Support
Lightroom 3 added the ability to import, manage and tag video files but as the popularity of video capture increases it’s important to provide a single, robust workflow solution that can support all of your imaging needs regardless if they’re still images or video captures. Lightroom 4 adds native playback for a wide variety of formats from mobile phones to high end DSLRs. Photographers can also apply common image adjustments to their video clips in real time. Additional video details:

Video playback directly within Lightroom

Video trimming (In and Out points)

Set Video poster frame. (This is the thumbnail that appears in the grid view)

Extract a single frame from a video as a JPEG file

Most popular DSLR, compact camera and smart phone video formats supported including AVCHD (AVCHD is the native format for Sony DSLRs and many new Mirrorless Interchangeable Lens, MIL, cameras)

Videos can be adjusted with a subset of the same controls we use for images.

White Balance (JPEG Equivalent)

Basic Tone

Exposure

Contrast

White Clipping

Black Clipping

Saturation

Vibrance

Tone Curve

Color Treatment (HSL)

Black and White

Split Toning

Process Version and Calibration

Map Module

It’s great that digital cameras automatically record a date/time stamp so that when it comes time find that image from New Years 2003, it’s easy to filter your image collection based on the information recorded by the camera. However, the “when” of an image is only half of the equation. What about the “where?” As an increasing number of cameras, smart phones leading the pack with compact cameras following closely behind, the “where” is also being recorded at the time of capture. Even Sony’s high-end a77 and a65 DSLR cameras have an option to automatically record the GPS coordinates of where you captured an image. But for those of us who don’t speak fluid latitude and longitude coordinates, we need a visual map interface to find the images by location. Lightroom 4 adds a dedicated map module that loads Google Maps to present your images in a clear and concise view. If your camera doesn’t automatically record the coordinates of your images you can easily drag and drop images to a location, use GPX tracklog files to link images based on date/time stamps or define saved locations that can be quickly associated with a set of images. (Not surprisingly, this link to Google Maps will only work when you are connected to the World Wide Web.) Additional Map details:

Tag images with a location using drag and drop or saved location assignment

Search for locations

Create Saved Locations

Managed privacy settings for saved locations

Load GPX tracklogs and auto tag images based on date/time stamps

Develop Module (Updated 2012 Process Version)

Ever wonder why there was both an Exposure control and a Brightness control in Lightroom’s Develop module? Why the Black setting defaulted to 5 and Brightness/Contrast to 50 and 25 respectively? When the Camera Raw plug-in was introduced in 2003 these concepts weren’t overwhelming for those intrepid photographers willing to switch their camera’s capture format to “RAW.” (It’s not an acronym so I have no idea why folks continue to capitalize that word…) When Lightroom and the Camera Raw plug-in started supporting JPEG and TIFF files, the visual appearance of the settings and preset behavior was never truly optimized for the additional formats. Lightroom 4 rationalizes the controls and addresses a fundamental photographic problem of balancing highlight and shadow detail. Please give the new tone controls a try on your most challenging images as well as the additional controls listed below:

Simplified controls in the Basic panel

Exposure, Contrast, Highlights, Shadows, Whites, Blacks

Powerful, content aware, shadow and highlight controls to extract all of the dynamic range in a single capture

Updated Clarity adjustment for superior results without the artifacts

Updated Chromatic Aberration correction solution

New local adjustment parameters

Noise Reduction

Temperature and Tint

Shadows

Highlights

Moire

Per channel curves adjustments

Soft proofing

Paper and ink simulation

Choose between perceptual and relative intent

Intuitive virtual copy creation for profile-specific adjustments

Profile and Monitor gamut warnings

Print module brightness/contrast option to address differences between monitor and paper characteristics

Direct Email from within Lightroom

I realize that this feature has 1998 written all over it but it’s still a very common request to be able to email from directly within Lightroom.

Configure your desktop mail client or AOL, Yahoo, Hotmail, Gmail webmail accounts to send email from Lightroom

Convenient size presets appropriate for email

Address book to store commonly used email addresses

Elegant Photo Book Creation

Photo books have grown in popularity and quality over the past few years and we’re proud to introduce a module dedicated to this workflow.

Flexible auto-layout tool with preset-based customization

Over 180 professionally designed page layouts

Intuitive drag and drop behaviors for reordering pages or swapping image locations

Helpful layout guides and page bleed information

Incredible flexibility through cell padding for text and photo cells

Dynamically located photo captions based on existing metadata or manual entry

Powerful type tools based on industry leading type technology found in Photoshop and Illustrator

Customizable background color

Elegant background graphics to enhance the style of travel or wedding books

Tight integration with Blurb book printing service

Set size, cover, paper quality directly within Lightroom

Price estimate dynamically provided during book creation

PDF Export options include size, resolution, color profile and output sharpening

Enhanced DNG options

These enhancements will be represented in the next DNG Specification update.(Version 1.4)

Embed Fast Load Data options dramatically improves image loading performance in the Develop module

Lossy compression option provides significant file savings with minimal quality impact. (Ideal for archiving outtakes or reducing the size of time lapse projects without losing the flexibility of raw)

Resolution reduction via export provides the ability to share lower resolution versions of the original raw file without losing the capabilities offered by raw.

Metadata and filter options available for DNG file types

Lightroom 4 Additional Features and JDIs

Publish Collections can now include rendered video publishing

Export to Adobe Revel functionality

Enhanced output model for saving/storing settings applied in Web, Slideshow, Print and Book. Efforts are now clearly visible in Collections panel.

New Zoom ratios (1:8 and 1:16)

Mac version now includes a language selection option via preferences

Move multiple folders from volume to volume (Previously only single folder workflow was enabled)

White balance sample area is now zoom-level dependent

Noise reduction adjustment is always displayed regardless of zoom level

Collapse the tether toolbar down to the shutter button by Option or Alt clicking the close button

Module picker can be customized via right-click option

Filter and search images by a saved or unsaved metadata property

Hierarchical Develop Preset display in Quick Develop

Layout overlay for tethered shooting workflow when attempting to match a specific layout template

Photos in publish collections that have been modified can be set to not re-publish

Additional Metadata controls on export

Disk burning now available on Windows 64-bit systems

Flag status is now ‘global’ (One setting per image regardless of location in folder or collection)

Stacking is now possible in collections

Flash galleries are now color managed

Per module walkthrough tips

Additional Notes:

An important correction was made to the Lightroom credits. There’s a great tradition in the Photoshop family of listing babies born to team members during each cycle. We’ve previously omitted references to the fertility of the Lightroom team but have corrected that omission with Lightroom 4.

“Adobe plans to change the name of Adobe Carousel to Adobe Revel. We originally chose the name Adobe Carousel because it was descriptive of core functionality in the product, in that photographs were viewed in a circular manner, like a carousel. However, we now plan to offer additional photography solutions on this platform, including but not limited to the ‘carousel’ feature. Our rapidly expanding charter for this new platform requires a name that is less narrowly descriptive of the current product features.” – Chris Quek, Senior Product Marketing Manager for Adobe Revel

Additional Known Issues

General

Multiple exports of the same photo to Adobe Revel will create duplicate

assets within Revel

Import from iPhone can sometimes take a longer than expected

Wrong photo is displayed after round tripping between library and print.

If Tethered Capture Settings dialog is left open for very long periods of time, Lightroom

will hang when attempting to dismiss the dialog

Tethered capture can fail after computer wakes from sleep.

Books Module

Blurb books created through Lightroom are limited to 160 pages

Blurb only supports a subset of the languages that Adobe supports

Undoing one-click photo captions works sporadically and can cause

Lightroom to lag

Photos may be removed from layout pages when using the color and rating

filter in the Book Module on Windows only.

Updating metadata in Library does not automatically propagate the change

in metadata-based text in Book.

Adding captions to multiple photos at once causes Lightroom to lag.

Text on spine in Hard Cover books is not centered

Video

Black line can appear on right and bottom of videos when viewed in Loupe on Windows

Video frames are occasionally played out of order on certain AVCHD video files

There could be a memory leak when exporting over 500 videos at once

Map Module

Lightroom can crash if you try to assign too many 15,000+ photos to a Saved Location at the same time in Map (Mac only)

Having over 1,000 tagged photos in the Map Module causes a performance lag.

Develop Module

The Auto Tone algorithm is still a work in progress. In some instances, Auto Tone in PV2010 will produce better results than Auto Tone in PV2012

Adobe Systems Incorporated (Nasdaq:ADBE) announced the immediate availability of Adobe® Photoshop® Lightroom® 2 software, the photographer’s essential toolbox for managing, adjusting and presenting large volumes of digital photographs. According to Adobe Lightroom 2 should come with new enhancements such as dual-monitor support, radical advances in non-destructive localized image correction, and streamlined search capabilities. As Adobe’s first application to support 64-bit for Mac OS X 10.5 Macintosh computers with Intel® processors and Microsoft® Windows® Vista® 64-bit operating systems, Lightroom 2 also provides improved memory performance for dealing with large scale images.

Photoshop Lightroom 2: Smarter, Faster and More Accurate

The enhanced Library module in Lightroom 2 helps streamline and accelerate photographers’ workflows. With the ability to visually organize images across multiple hard drives, Lightroom 2 and its powerful Library Filter Bar makes it easy for users to quickly find the images they need. The Suggested Keywords feature helps photographers keyword their images by making intelligent suggestions based on their own previous efforts. New dual-monitor support allows users to expand their workspace, giving them flexibility to edit and organize images in a way that maximizes an additional display.

In the Develop module, the new Local Adjustment Brush lets photographers fine-tune specific areas of an image to precisely adjust color, exposure and tonal range without affecting other areas of the image. The new Graduated Filter expands the toolbox in Lightroom, allowing for edits to larger areas by applying gradually diminishing or increasing adjustment effects such as exposure, clarity, and saturation, alone, or in any combination. Lightroom 2 also helps photographers print more efficiently by quickly arranging photos of multiple sizes on one or many pages with flexible and customizable templates to maximize paper and ink. Intelligent algorithms automatically determine optimal sharpening for screen or print, producing crisper images faster. Developers can further extend the Lightroom workflow with Web, Export and Metadata Software Development Kits available at the Adobe Developer Connection, http://www.adobe.com/devnet/ .

Ground-Breaking Innovation in Raw Technology

New raw technology gives photographers access to flexible camera profiles. Camera profiles are the visual starting point for the raw processing workflow, but image preferences vary for every photographer. To minimize surprises, Adobe is supplying default camera profiles that closely emulate the visual looks that photographers are used to seeing from their favorite camera, while also providing the ability to create highly customized profiles to suit different tastes. Camera profiles are available for immediate download on Adobe Labs (http://labs.adobe.com ) for use with Lightroom 2 and Camera Raw 4.5, along with the DNG Profile Editor for the community to test and create their own profiles.

The Adobe Camera Raw 4.5 plug-in and DNG Converter 4.5 are also now available on Adobe.com and support over 190 camera models including the Olympus E 420 and E 520 models.

The NAPP (National Association of Photoshop Professionals) has launched their Lightroom 2 Learning Center.

New in Lightroom 2.0

(Source: Lightroom Journal)

Library

Streamlined Organization and Worfklow

Layout: The entire Library layout has been revisited to provide a more intuitive image organization experience. The left hand panel of the Library has been streamlined to include only the most relevant image sources: the folders the images are physically stored in and collections of images that the photographer creates.

Folders: Photographers working across multiple hard drives will find that the enhanced volume and folder layout will make it a much more intuitive experience to manage images on one or many hard drives. The volume indicators clearly indicate the hard drive that you’re working with and provide the option to show the online/offline status, the amount of space available, the number of photos you’re working with and there’s an indicator light that migrates from green to red as your hard drive fills up. Now it’s visually much easier to move your images from hard drive to hard drive and understand where your images are stored when a external hard drive is no longer connected.

Collections: The Collection panel has received significant attention with the addition of improved iconography and collection sets that allow photographers to create a hierarchy while maintaining collection-specific sort order. There is also the ability to save output specific collections for Slideshow/Print/Web. This can be accomplished by creating a new collection item while in the specific output module. The subsequent icon in the collection panel will provide a quick reference and link to the images and output settings you created. Collections still maintain their auto-save capabilities when it comes to on-the-fly output creations that don’t require a persistent entry in the Library.

Smart Collections are now available. Specify the criteria for a smart collection and images will be automatically added to the collection if they meet the criteria. An expert user tip: Try alt/option clicking when adding a new search criterion.

Target Collection functionality allows you to specify any Lightroom collection as the destination of the quick collection shortcut key, B.

Filter Bar: With the source location of the images clearly defined in the left hand panel, the top of the grid view provides a panel that will filter the content. Use the ‘\’ key to hide or show the filter functionality and expand one section at a time to filter the content. Each category below can be toggled on or off by clicking on the name and multiple filter categories can be shift-selected to provide additional control.

Text: Search across your images using text search field

Refine: Filter your grid view by flags, star ratings, color labels and the type of file, Master or Virtual Copy. This functionality was previously located only in the right hand side of the filmstrip. It still remains in that location now labeled ‘Filter’ as a quick tool that can be used in any module.

Metadata: A wide range of metadata is now presented in easy to browse filter columns that can be added, removed and customized per your organization workflow. Choose the field to filter on by clicking on the column header and select menu icon at the right side of each column to add or remove a column. The column arrangement and selection can be stored as a preset that is defined in the upper right hand corner of the filter bar. Note that the Date and Location fields contain the option to show hierarchical or flat representations of the data. The Date field also includes the day of the week in addition to the numerical date.

The Keywording pane has a new Keyword Set called “Suggested Keywords.” Keywording is simplified through Lightroom’s ability to suggest keywords for the current image based on existing keywords applied to that image as well as keywords applied to images that are close neighbors in terms of capture time. For example, if a number of images in a catalog contain the keywords dog and beach, an image assigned the keyword ‘beach’ will cause the suggested keyword panel to automatically update to show ‘dog’ as a suggested keyword. The Keywording panel also includes a dedicated keyword entry field below the larger box that displays all of the assigned keywords. The Keyword List provides a convenient filter to help find and manage your keywords. Checkboxes are available to quickly apply additional keywords to the selected images and arrows to the right of each keyword are a link to view all of the images tagged with that keyword.

Multiple Monitors: Lightroom 2.0 offers a dual monitor solution that can adjust to fit your particular monitor set up. The main Lightroom window that includes the Module picker can be positioned on either monitor and the following views can be provided on an additional monitor. To activate a multiple monitor environment, choose the monitor icon in the lower right hand side of Lightroom, just above the filmstrip. If a second monitor is not attached, a second window will appear on a single display.

Grid: Place the grid on a secondary monitor for quick image selection while the develop module is displayed on the other monitor. Or use the grid to reorder images while creating slideshow, print or web output.

Loupe: Allows an image at a preferred zoom level display on an alternate monitor.

In Normal mode, the image displayed on the alternate monitor is changed when the selection is changed in the primary Lightroom window.

Live mode is continually updated based on the image and area of an image the mouse is currently hovering or passing over. Zooming to a 1:1 view allows for quick focus checking across a number of images displayed in a grid view on the primary monitor.

Locked mode fixes the image displayed on the alternate monitor until you wish to change the selection by selecting alt/option-Enter to make the current selection visible.

Compare: Offers the same powerful compare functionality previously in the Library but can now be used to compare images while selections are made in the grid view in the Library or while adjustments are made in the Develop module.

Survey: View multiple images at once while organizing or adjusting in another display.

Photoshop Integration: Lightroom can now open images directly in Photoshop without writing out TIFF or PSD files first. The previous ‘write file to disk first’ behavior was inefficient and the new behavior enables a faster a more functional workflow that includes:

Open files in Photoshop as a Smart Object: Utilize the non-destructive smart object workflow by opening the image as a smart object directly into a Photoshop document.

Select multiple images to merge as a Panorama utilizing Photoshop CS3’s incredible new panorama functionality

Merge multiple exposures into a single Photoshop HDR image

Load multiple files or virtual copies into Photoshop as separate layers in a single document.

Important Note: This integration is only available with Photoshop CS3 (10.0.1)

Export Functionality: Managing and organizing exported images is much easier now with the following capabilities:

Export files automatically to the same folder as the original or a subfolder of the original

Add the exported images to the Lightroom catalog with the option of stacking the export file with the original

Sharpen images on export for Print or Screen usage utilizing an adaptive algorithm that takes into account the intended use and resolution.

Send exported images directly to another third party application selected in the export dialog

More notes on Library functionality:

The 10k pixel limit has been lifted and now images with up to 65,000 pixels per side or 512MP total may be imported into Lightroom. This is particularly useful when utilizing the new Photoshop integration for panorama creation.

Develop Module

Localized Correction: The develop module now provides the ability to correct specific areas of an image without affecting other areas. A common example of this in traditional photography would be the dodge and burn experience in the darkroom. Lightroom provides brushes that a photographer can ‘load’ with different types of corrective techniques that were previously only available globally including exposure, brightness, clarity and saturation. Images can also be tinted locally using specific hue and saturation values that can provide an excellent way of counteracting mixed lighting environments.

The tools previously available in the toolbar have been relocated to the right hand panel just below the histogram. (Crop, Clone/Heal, Red Eye and the new local correction brush) Selecting a tool from the panel will reveal the options for that tool. Click on it again to hide those options and return to the standard develop panel.

Adjustment Brush

The controls available for the local correction brush are segmented into three basic areas: Mask, Effect and Brush. A quick walkthrough of the correction technique is below:

On entering the local correction panel the brush will become active.

The type of desired correction should be selected from the Effect section. A photographer can paint in a positive brightness effect for the shadows and a negative exposure effect for a bright sky.

Combinations of effects can be selected and saved as presets by showing the effects sliders. (Horizontal toggle in the upper right area of the effect panel)

The brush size, feather and opacity can be set before applying the correction. An Auto Mask option is available to help confine the brush strokes and subsequent mask within an area of similar color. The airbrush option provides a diffused correction application relative to the standard painting mode.

Once a brush stroke is applied, a circular point or pin will appear on the image where you first applied the brush stroke. Additional brush strokes can be applied that will add to the current correction area. To refine the area hold down the Alt or Option key to begin erasing with the brush.

To adjust the amount applied to the entire area click down on the circular marker or pin and move the cursor to the left or the right to decrease or increase the amount setting.

To refine the correction settings, click on the pin and detailed adjustments are available in the right panel and will be applied to the selected pin.

Create a new correction mask or brush stroke by selecting the New option.

The pins can be hidden or shown with the H shortcut key.

Use one of the tint presets provided to apply a color tint or use the Lightroom color selection dialog by double-clicking on the rectangle to the right of the presets. Change a preset by selecting a color in the dialog then click-and-hold on the preset box to be populated by that selection.

There are two brush presets represented by A and B in the brush section. After modification of the brush controls, a preset can be updated by clicking and holding on the specific preset letter to be associated with the settings.

Graduated Filter

Recreating the effect of a graduated neutral density filter, this tool goes even further allowing the ability to modify all of the effect parameters in a single graduated effect. Select the effect and click and drag the gradient onto the image. Rotate and adjust as necessary. You can also return to the specific effect settings and modify them after the filter is applied.

Shortcut Keys

Local Adjustment Keyboard Shortcuts

Toggle Adjustment Brush – K

Toggle Graduated Filter – M

Graduated Filter Scale from Center – Alt/Option + Drag

Constrain brush stroke to straight line – Shift

Invert Gradient – ‘

Vignette: The previous lens correction vignette effect was only applied to the entire image frame and as an artistic effect could be obscured after an image was cropped. An additional framing vignette effect has been added that will apply a vignette to an image, respecting the cropped borders.

Basic Panel Keyboard Shortcuts: Photographers who prefer to utilize their keyboards for basic image adjustments will find that the +/- keys are linked to the Exposure adjustment in the Develop module. Adding the Shift key will boost the increment amount, the comma and period keys will cycle through the basic panel controls and the semi-colon will reset the control currently in focus.

Improved Auto Adjustment: The Auto adjustment has been modified in response to feedback that previous adjustments were too bright.

Improved profiles for Raw data: An enhanced set of profiles has been released on Adobe Labs in order to provide an improved default rendering of raw data. (Many Canon photographers complained that our reds were too orange.) In addition to the improved Adobe default profile, there are additional profiles for each camera that emulate the results that would be obtained were those settings chosen in the camera manufacturers software or if the photographer chose to shoot JPEG.

Print Module

Picture Package: The print module now provides the ability to create multii-page layouts for a single image arranged in multiple sizes. This allows photographers to quickly and easily print a package of images quickly and easily.

Choose Picture Package from the Layout Engine in the top right corner of the print module and a blank page will be presented.

In the Cells panel click on one of the preset size to add an image cell to the page or use the drop down option to edit and create your own custom size. Cells can be added to the page until the page is filled and a new page will be added to the layout automatically. Up to six pages can be included in a layout.

After all of the required cells have been added, choose Auto Layout to automatically create an efficient, easy to cut print layout or manually move the cells to your liking.

To move a cell, click on the image and move the cell to the desired location. To delete an image cell, click on the image and choose delete. A page can be deleted by mousing over the page and clicking on the ‘X’ in the red circle.

When an image aspect ration is much different than the cell aspect ratio, the image can be moved within the cell by holding the CMD/CTRL key down and clicking on the image and dragging it.

Print to JPEG: Many photographers have asked for the ability to send their Lightroom print layouts directly to a lab that will print JPEG files. Choose JPEG as the option in the Print Job dialog to specify your print output as a JPEG file for lab delivery. (Select a custom ICC profile for your lab in the color management area)

Print Sharpening: Lightroom previously provided three levels of print sharpening. Impressive new algorithms have been added to automatically determine the correct amount of print sharpening required based on the output media and resolution of the file.

Lightroom 2 SDK

The Lightroom SDK allows you to customize and extend certain Lightroom features by creating plug-ins. In the current release these features are extensible:

Export functionality: You can create an export plug-in, which customizes the behavior of Lightroom’s Export dialog and export processing. You can add or remove items from the Export dialog, alter or augment the rendering process, and send images to locations other than files on the local computer.

Metadata: You can define customized public or private metadata fields for Lightroom. Public or private metadata can be associated with individual photos.

Web engine functionality: You can create an HTML web-engine plug-in, which defines a new type of HTML photo gallery. The engines you define appear in the Gallery panel at the upper right of the Web module.

A Lightroom plug-in consists of Lua-language files (scripts) that define the plug-in functionality, and an information or manifest file that describes the contents of the plug-in. The information file must have a specific name, and be placed in a folder with the Lua source files and resource files; the folders may need to be in specific locations.

Adobe did release the LightRoom 1.4.1 update. It is a fix to the borken 1.4 release which has been pulled off in March

According to Adobe and the Lightroom 1.4.1 Readme the following has been added or addressed:

UPDATE FOR LIGHTROOM 1.4:
Lightroom 1.4.1 includes corrections for the following issues:
(These issues are specific to the 1.4.1 update. Lightroom 1.4.1 also includes all of the previous updates listed for Lightroom
1.4 below)

Lightroom 1.4 incorrectly modified the EXIF time date field of images that had a metadata update applied. This incorrect modification does not appear in Lightroom or Bridge and is only viewable through third party EXIF tools. This error has been corrected in Lightroom 1.4.1 and all files in a Lightroom catalog that have been incorrectly modified will be corrected on their next metadata update. (Metadata can be updated by selecting the files in the Library grid view and choosing Command or CTRL + S to save and update the metadata.)

Olympus JPEG files could render incorrectly in Lightroom 1.4, displaying an artifact in the exported file.

Any conversion to DNG in Lightroom 1.4 would cause the DNG file to become unreadable by Lightroomfs Develop Module or Camera Raw 4.4 in Photoshop. The issue has been corrected and files should be converted to DNG again in order to resolve the issue for existing files. Returning to the original native raw files is not necessary. The affected DNG files can be selected and converted again using the DNG Converter 4.4.1 available at www.adobe.com/dng/

Lightroom 1.4 provided degraded import performance relative to Lightroom 1.3.

The Lightroom 1.4.1 update also reflects the Lightroom 1.4 notes below.

The Lightroom team apologizes for the inconvenience caused by the issues presented in the initial Lightroom 1.4 update.

Lightroom 1.4 includes corrections for the following issues:

Compatibility with legacy printer drivers on OS X 10.5 (Leopard) has been updated.

Previous camera profiles identified in the Calibrate panel of the Develop module may have displayed poor results at extreme ends of the temperature and tint ranges. A new camera profile identified as Camera Raw 4.4 is now available and will be applied by default to all images without existing Camera Raw or Lightroom settings. The creation of new default profiles will also include the updated Camera Raw 4.4 profile. Images edited in Camera Raw or Lightroom with earlier profiles will retain the earlier profile value and visual appearance.

In previous grayscale conversions the Color Noise setting was disabled and this could result in an image with excessive noise when grayscale channel mixing is applied. Both the tool and effect have been enabled in Lightroom 1.4 providing the ability to reduce noise in grayscale conversions. In order to return to the prior visual appearance, Color Noise reduction can be set to zero.

Lightroom 1.4 includes the following known issues:
In the print module, deselecting the Identity Plate option when the option to render on every image is already applied will result in no change and the Identity Plate will be applied to every image. To remove the Identity plates, deselect the option to render the Identity Plates on every image then deselect the Identity Plate option.
Working with Lightroom 1.4 and Adobe Photoshop Camera Raw
Lightroom and Photoshop Camera Raw share the same image processing technology to ensure consistent and compatible results across applications that support raw processing. These applications include Photoshop CS3, Photoshop Elements 4.01 for Mac, Photoshop Elements 6.0 and Premiere Elements 4.0 for Windows.

Photoshop Camera Raw 4.4
Adobe applications must be updated with the Camera Raw 4.4 plug-in in order to ensure compatibility with Lightroom 1.4 develop module settings. Photoshop CS3 users can update the Camera Raw plug-in automatically using the Update tool listed under the Help menu. The Camera Raw 4.4 plug-in can also be downloaded and installed manually by visiting the Adobe web site: www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/cameraraw.html. Please follow the installation instruction carefully.

Sharing Lightroom Settings with Camera Raw 4.4
By default, Lightroomfs develop module settings are stored in Lightroomfs database. In order to ensure that Lightroom develop settings can be viewed by Camera Raw 4.4 the settings must be written to the XMP metadata block for that file. This metadata is stored in an XMP sidecar file (Imagename.xmp) in the current image directory of proprietary raw files or stored directly within DNG files. To update images with the latest develop settings, choose the library module and select the group of target images. Choose the shortcut Command(Ctrl) + S to save the settings to the XMP metadata block.

Viewing Lightroom settings in Camera Raw 4.4
Before working in conjunction with Lightroom and Camera Raw please set the Camera Raw preference to: Save image settings in: Sidecar “.xmp” files. By default Camera Raw will display the image adjustments exactly as performed in Lightroomfs develop module.

Viewing Camera Raw settings in Lightroom
Raw files edited by previous versions of Camera Raw will maintain their previous appearance when imported into Lightroom.
Note: Those files must have been edited with the preference set to Save image settings in: Sidecar g.xmph files in order for Lightroom to respect the previous edit. Files edited in Camera Raw after importation into Lightroom can be updated in Lightroom by choosing the gRead Metadata from Files h from the Metadata file menu. Note: This menu option is only available in the Lightroom Library.

Additional Notes on Camera Raw and Lightroom

Camera Raw will only read the current settings for the primary image in the Lightroom Library. Virtual Copy adjustments and Snapshot adjustments will not be displayed or available in Camera Raw 4.4
