Yamaha releases MONTAGE White and OS v3.0
Introducing MONTAGE White
MONTAGE is now available in a stunning new white finish. AND MONTAGE OS v3.0 is AVAILABLE NOW and adds great new features! In October MODX owners get all those new features too!
Since 1974, Yamaha synthesizers have inspired artists with amazing sound and expressive control. From the dynamic DX7 to the incredibly versatile MOTIF, Yamaha synthesizers have helped artists shape the sound of music.
Enter MONTAGE White – a flagship synthesizer with an intense hot look.
Unlike other synthesizers, MONTAGE is platform-focused and constantly evolves with OS updates. Past updates have added significant improvements to Sound, Control and Workflow and MONTAGE OS v3.0 is the biggest one yet. And, with the exception of the MONTAGE-only DAW Remote feature, ALL of the new enhancements found in MONTAGE OS v3.0 are included in MODX OS v2.0. Check it out!
Sound
MONTAGE OS v3.0 and MODX OS v2.0 add several new synth engine enhancements and new Performance content.
Wave Folder
The new Wave Folder effect increases harmonic content by “folding back” threshold-exceeding amplitude peaks. Wow, that’s a mouthful! In other words, unlike clipping that chops off the top of the wave, the Wave Folder “folds” the peaks back in.
The MONTAGE Wave Folder is available as a Part Insertion Effect (including A/D Input for external instruments and mic input), Variation Effect and Master Effect.
VCM Mini Filter and Mini Booster
The new VCM (Virtual Circuitry Modeling) Mini Filter and Mini Booster are available as Part Insertion, Variation or Master. The VCM Mini Filter is a classic four-pole 24 dB/octave filter. Cutoff, Resonance, Dry/Wet mix, Input Level and Output Level can all be assigned to a Motion Sequence Lane, the Envelope Follower or the physical controls (Super Knob, Assignable Knobs, Modulation Wheel, etc., on MONTAGE and MODX).
The VCM Mini Booster is related to the VCM Mini Filter. This boost/EQ effect functions like an EQ and booster, providing a tone shaping and saturation effect:
Extended LFO
The Extended LFO brings high-speed modulation to the MONTAGE and MODX. You can use it to generate interesting pitch, filter or amplitude modulation that goes well beyond the slower oscillation of a standard LFO. The high-speed nature creates cool granularity that enhances synth leads, pads, comps, special effect and more. With the standard LFO the Speed parameter range goes from 0-63 (0-42 Hz) for AWM Parts. When the “Extended LFO” is set to ON, the Speed parameter range extends from 0-415 (0-1356.59 Hz). These higher speeds generate interesting sounds when modulating Pitch, Filter or Amplitude.
Each of these new sound enhancements – Wave Folder, VCM Mini Filter and Mini Booster and Extended LFO – can all be customized for real time control using Motion Control. Assign parameters to the Super Knob, Motion Sequence, Envelope Follower and more and create your own custom set ups.
Pattern Sequencer
The all new Pattern Sequencer is the among most significant features in the new MONTAGE and MODX OS versions. You will find this new selection under the “Play/Rec” tab on the left:
The Pattern Sequencer extends the MONTAGE and MODX Performance Recorder with multitrack loop-based sequence recording. Each Pattern has up to eight Sections and each Section has up to 16 Tracks. Sections are selected using the [SCENE] buttons on the front panel of MONTAGE and MODX.
Hybrid MIDI I/O Mode
As the name suggests, the new Hybrid MIDI I/O Mode is a combination of the Single and Multi MIDI I/O Modes. In this new mode, Parts with KEYBOARD CONTROL “On” controlled by Global MIDI channel, everything else controlled by the Part channel. This allows you to use cool Multi Part Performances like “CFX Concert” or “Seattle Sections” in combination with other Single Parts for additional backing tracks. It’s great addition when sequencing MIDI tracks with an external DAW.
Rhythm Pattern (New for MONTAGE)
MODX makes adding a drum Part with Arpeggio to a Performance easy. Now that functionality is added to MONTAGE. Just press and hold [SHIFT] then press [CONTROL ASSIGN] and the Rhythm Pattern screen appears for you to select a drum kit along with a corresponding drum Arpeggio. It’s a great way to quickly add a drum part to a piano for composition or practice.

Brings Modern Aesthetic, Color Display and Simplified User Interface to Hugely Popular Series
Yamaha today unveiled the DGX-670, a stylish digital piano featuring a modern, attractive aesthetic and a simplified user interface.
The new “Portable Grand” ensemble instrument is a full, 88-note weighted action keyboard with exceptional playability, superb sound and visual appeal, making it ideal for beginners and accomplished pianists alike. It replaces the DGX-660, which has earned accolades as one of the top-selling digital pianos in the world.
The DGX-670 includes the company’s Graded Hammer Standard keyboard action—the low keys have a heavier response and the high keys have a lighter response—which delivers the touch piano teachers recommend for building proper finger technique for playing acoustic pianos.
Yamaha is known for its outstanding acoustic pianos, and the DGX-670 offers precise samples of the company’s flagship 9-foot concert grand piano, the CFX, which is sonically characterized by an exquisite tone across the entire dynamic range.
While the DGX-660 had a traditional, rectangular frame, the DGX-670 has been totally redesigned with a modern body featuring curved edges. Operation of a wide selection of functions is made quick and easy, thanks to a new, full-color LCD screen featuring a simplified user interface. The keyboard also has enlarged buttons on the front panel that feel nice to the touch without taking up too much space.
To make playing fun and interactive, the DGX-670 offers compatibility with “You Are the Artist,” digital sheet music featuring songs by popular and iconic artists such as Adele, The Beatles, Coldplay, Elton John and more. These song titles are accompanied by MIDI song files that provide inspiring backing tracks and can be purchased at YamahaMusicSoft.com. Selected songs appear as notes and lyrics on the instrument’s LCD screen, while professionally-arranged background music—all taken from the sounds of the keyboard—plays along. Players can slow down the tempo of the songs if they want to practice at a more comfortable tempo; a “guide” mode will even pause the music until you play the correct note or notes, so you’re never rushing to catch up. Players can also plug a microphone directly into the keyboard, so they can sing their favorite songs with excellent digital effects, while also playing along.

Yamaha DX7 Cartridge AI Generator
The Yamaha DX7 is a classic synthesizer often cited as the sound of the ’80s, thisdx7cartdoesnotexist.com uses a specially trained AI to create completely novel preset cartridges. The Yamaha DX7 has a total of 155 parameters, the AI uses a machine learning model known as a VAE that reduces these 155 parameters down to just 8.
The model can then choose these 8 numbers randomly and map them back to the full 155 parameters of the DX7, it has learned to do this by training on a large selection of presets compiled by Bobby Blue.
Each cartridge is generated in real-time by sampling 32 sets of the 8 VAE parameters and compiling them together in real-time. The model generates 99.9% unique voices and so it is highly unlikely that any two cartridges created on this site will be the same.
