BritStrip with Successor-Like Compressor

Heritage Audio is proud to announce the availability of the BritStrip — beautifully representing the culmination of 50 years of analog design in a single-space 19-inch rack device that nails the sound of yesteryear’s iconic recordings for present-day demanding engineers as a British-spec discrete Class-A console channel strip with the same diode bridge compressor found in the European pro audio manufacturer’s multi-award-nominated Successor stereo bus compressor.

The BritStrip begins its journey to tasty console channel strip glory with the same preamp found in Heritage Audio’s 73JR II — flavored with a new custom input transformer co-designed with renowned British company Carnhill, also responsible for the custom output transformer that completes its all-discrete, Class-A, three-gain stage design. Flexible features worth noting from a preamp perspective include -80dB of gain, a 20dB PAD, phase reversal, and an impedance switch for 1,200 or 300-ohm input.

The BritStrip console channel strip’s D.I. is also taken from the highly-acclaimed design found in the 73JR II, an all-discrete Class-A JFET (Junction Field-Effect Transistor) circuit fronting the microphone transformer to provide all the colour and weight any present-day demanding engineer could conceivably ask for. Furthermore, the D.I. also includes a passive THRU output to feed a separate amplifier.

As an expanded 73 equalizer, effectively, the BritStrip’s EQ features three Vinkor pot core inductors in the MID band and H.P. (high-pass) FILTER sections, such that the impact is hard to believe with extreme boosts being exceptionally musical. Moreover, the MID band is great for sculpting fat and punchy snare, kick, guitars, vocals, and anything else! No need for subtlety — as is the case with most EQs — since the BritStrip does not sound ‘phase-y’ or lose headroom in extreme settings. Indeed, its inductor-based low-pass filter, directly taken from the 73 design, lets users control out of range low end without affecting the quality of sought-after frequencies. Furthermore, the BritStrip’s HIGH SHELF and LOW SHELF settings have been extended to include a bell mode, making them more versatile.

Veering into compression territory, its implementation in the BritStrip renders it perfect for tracking, thanks to the BLEND control and elaborate SC. (sidechain) FILTER flexibly giving instruments ‘record-ready’ dynamics to provide performers with a ‘finished feel’ in real time. The compressor section provides plenty of sidechain flexibility, with five frequency choices and an external sidechain (SC. EXT) option. Owners of two BritStrip console channel strips can even LINK their respective compressors, creating the ultimate stereo tracking solution!

Further flexibility abounds as the BritStrip allows for compression and equalizer routing, with pre-compression EQ’ing making the compression detector more sensitive to the boosted frequencies and less sensitive to those cut, while post-compression EQ’ing makes the compression detector unresponsive to the EQ settings.

Saying all that, then, as the culmination of 50 years of analogue design, BritStrip is surely specified to nail the sound of yesteryear’s iconic recordings for present-day demanding engineers as a British-spec discrete Class-A console channel strip with a Successor-like compressor, conveniently housed in a single-space 19-inch rack- mounting chassis that looks and feels the part.

3JRII The 2021 Update

The 73JRII  is the 2021 update to the already classic 73JR, a true 73 style mic preamp in a single 500 series slot with some added features that will cover all the recording needs for engineers and musicians that don´t find the need to track with eq. European pro audio manufacturer Heritage Audio announced the availability of the 73JR II — advancing its already classic 73JR single-slot 500 Series true 73-style mic preamp module with additional features surely set to satisfy the most demanding of recording engineers.

  • Microphone input impedance: HI, 1200 Ohm minimum, LO, 300 Ohm minimum. Higher gain positions gradually have greater impedances, optimum for lo gain ribbon mics. Input is transformer balanced and floating.
  • Line input impedance: 10K Ohms bridging, transformer balanced and floating.
  • DI input impedance: Greater than 2 Megohms, unbalanced.
  • Output impedance: Less than 75 Ohms, transformer balanced and floating, to drive a load of 600 ohms (factory terminated).
  • Maximum output: Greater than +26dBu into 600 ohms.
  • THD: Less than 0.025% at 1 Khz, less than 0.05% at 100Hz.
  • Frequency response: 20Hz ( +0.3dB ) to 20Khz (-0.2dB)
  • Maximum gain: Slightly greater than 80dB
  • Noise: Less than -125dBu EIN.
  • Power consumption: 86 mA per rail @+-16VDC.

Compromises can be made when trying to adapt a 73-style mic preamp into the smaller 500 Series format fit for compact enclosures — such as API’s popular ‘Lunchbox’ (letting space-restricted discerning users choose to house however many modules they wish from a seemingly-endless selection of manufacturers) or, of course, Heritage Audio’s own OST range of 500 Series enclosures— but this is far from the case with Heritage Audio’s 73JR II. By boasting heritage quality through and through, it uses only discrete, through-hole traditional components combined with hand labour to create a great-sounding Seventies-vintage vibe. As a faithful three- stage, all Class-A 73-style preamp, it is the real deal, with Styroflex and tantalum capacitors used throughout, and no corners cut.

Indeed, it uses the full three-gain stage circuit for up to 80 dB of gain with noise of -125dBu EIN (Equivalent Input Noise) over all the gain positions, and a true 24v onboard power supply for identical performance and distortion point. The output transformer is a custom Carnhill, manufactured for Heritage Audio by the renowned British company concerned in its St Ives factory in Cambridgeshire, while the input transformer is another custom Carnhill, this time manufactured in Oxfordshire — the same one found in Heritage Audio’s higher-end 80 Series modules, in fact, so hugely impacts the musical mojo of the 73JR II as a direct result.

73JRII FEATURES
Heritage Audio Improves 500 Series 73-style mic Pre-Amp with 73JR II 60

Readily saying all that, then, the 73JR II itself is an update to Heritage Audio’s already classic 73JR single-slot 500 Series true 73-style mic preamp module with added features surely set to satisfy the most demanding of recording engineers. Enter an all-discrete Class-A hi-pass filter, sweepable from 20 to 220 Hz — making it easier to tighten the low end without affecting desired frequencies; a LINE mode, allowing for reamping of prerecorded tracks — perfect for adding some color to lifeless recordings; and a D.I. (Direct Input) — itself automatically switching to DI mode when inserting a 1⁄4” TS cable — that is an all-discrete Class-A JFET circuit fronting the microphone transformer to provide all the color and weight anyone could conceivably ask for!

Finally, Heritage Audio has paid particular attention to power handling by implementing internal +24v slow-turn-on-regulation — hugely healthy for any 500 Series enclosure’s power supply since it keeps the 73JR II’s power independent from other slots.

Simply speaking, anyone adding a 73JR II to their 500 Series recording setup is assured of a real deal 73-style sound.

Heritage Audio’s HA-81A Two Classic Console´s Circuits

European pro audio manufacturer Heritage Audio is proud to announce the availability of the HA-81A — a British-spec hybrid channel strip representing the latest addition to its ELITE SERIES range of zero-compromise, high- quality yet affordable alternatives to entry-level brands as an all-new mix of two classic consoles, combining an all-discrete, Class-A 73-style mic preamp with an acclaimed 81-style equalizer, arguably the most in-demand products for any recording engineer endeavoring to create an instantly classic sound.

Creatively combining hybrid design with Heritage (Audio) quality as an ALL-CLASS A CONSOLE MIC AMP/EQUALIZER — DESIGNED & MANUFACTURED IN THE E.U., as also boldly blazoned across the front panel of its 1U rack-mountable classy chassis, the HA-81A utilises only rotary switches and precision, concentric potentiometers. Products in Heritage Audio’s acclaimed ELITE SERIES range are all built with the most cutting-edge design and manufacturing methods, without ever compromising audio quality or cutting corners — all at the European pro audio manufacturer’s Spanish headquarters, as is the case with the HA-81A.

Digging deeper, the HA-81A’s preamp section is an 80 dB, all-discrete Class-A design with Carnhill and St. Ives input and output transformers — the exact ones, in fact, found in Heritage Audio’s other ELITE SERIES products. Put simply: it is Heritage Audio’s top-notch take on an acclaimed 73-style preamplifier, including input gain (switches in 5 dB steps from 0 to 80), OUTPUT trim (attenuates from 0 to -00 — infinity), -20 dB PAD (ahead of the input transformer), and +48v phantom power.

FEATURES HA 81A

  • Microphone input impedance: HI, 1200 Ohm minimum, LO, 300 Ohm minimum. Higher gain positions gradually have greater impedances, optimum for low gain ribbon mics. Input is transformer balanced and floating.
  • Line input impedance: 10KOhms bridging, transformer balanced and floating.
  • Output impedance: Less than 75 Ohms, transformer balanced and floating, to drive a load of 600 Ohms.
  • Maximum output: Greater than +26.5dBu into 600 Ohms (internally terminated)
  • THD: Less than 0.025% at 1Khz, Less than 0.05% at 100Hz.
  • Frequency response :20Hz (+0.3dB) to 20Khz (-0.2dB).EQ Off. For EQ ON frequency response please check the features section.
  • Maximum Gain: Slightly greater than 80dB.
  • Equivalent Input Noise: Less than -125dBu at 80dB mic gain.
  • Output stage noise: Less than -100dBu.

Meanwhile, moving on to the HA-81A’s equalizer section, it is an exceptionally musical four-band, inductor-based affair whose high- and low-pass filters (each with five frequency positions) are far from wanting. Whereas the typical 73-style three-band equalizers exceed at musicality but may fall short of the mark from a features perspective, the HA-81A equally excels at both by offering extreme (five frequency-position) control over shelf or bell response curves on the high and lows, and dual Q on both mid bands with dedicated high and low mid ones (each with 10 frequency positions) — a choice of 40 frequency selections overall.

On the face of it, then, as a mic preamp that meets the discerning demands of classic sound-seeking recording engineers, the HA-81A lives up to Heritage Audio’s manufacturing mantra: The sound of yesterday — built for tomorrow.
