FabFilter Pro-Q 2 – Equalizer Plug-In Review

FabFilter over the years has become the leading plugin developer for EQ and other needs. FabFilter Pro-Q 2 is the next version of an already strong EQ and after being released three years ago FabFilter Pro-Q 2 is still in the Top 5 of all available EQ and widely used in the professional space.

The older version FabFilter Pro-Q released in early 2010. For surgical precision work or areas of your mix you need to improve FabFilter Pro-Q 2 is the tool to use.

Installation

You install the filter and register the plugin by registering a specific code within the plugin. It is easy and straightforward.

Sound

You can shape the need Q as you need, solo the impacted band or just listen to what is removed or boosted. Overall the included features allow you to address almost all use cases when it comes to EQ. If you look for coloring as many vintages EQ I would put such an EQ in pre- or post-stage to add the color and use this EQ for focused cuts and boosts. The Q can be remarkably wide and extremely narrow and become surgical, and there are up to 24 EQ bands available to you to change the sound.

Unique features like Spectrum Grab which allow you to only work with the peak in the frequency spectrum analyzer. EQ Match to help you to achieve the sound of a reference track. A real-time Spectrum analyzer which has become a standard in so many plugins not only from FabFilter. Band controls to quickly and efficiently change the settings of the selected EQ bands,  and more.

User interface & Usability

It comes with an incredibly intuitive resizable interface. When released this UI was unique, and many followed the lead of FabFilter and created a similar look and feel with different products. I genuinely enjoy the intuitive user experience in FabFilter Pro-Q 2 and the other products from FabFilter. The plugin includes almost everything you want in an EQ and manages to present the functionally in a usable way. The solo feature now familiar in many EQ was pushed by FabFilter when Pro-Q 2 was released.

The plugin offers an amazingly natural user interface which helps you in your work when you need to tame or boost tracks, mixes. or prepare an input sound for a filter plugin. FabFilter Pro-Q 2 is a swiss army knife, and it is easy to use. If you are looking for vintage coloring/tone you could add those additional plugins after you worked with this tool on the problematic frequencies.
